Weight Loss and RelaxationLosing weight and keeping it off is one of the hardest things to do. Weight loss is not just a matter of eating less or eating healthier foods. If it was that simple, most people would have done it by now. But one-third of Americans are obese. In this chapter you’ll learn how tension leads to overeating and how relaxation increases the chances of success of all weight loss programs. People overeat for the same reasons that other people use drugs or alcohol. They overeat to escape, relax, or reward themselves. Overeating isn’t about hunger. It's emotional eating. It has been shown that overeating acts on the same part of the brain as drug addiction.(1)To see the connection between tension and overeating, consider the times when you're more likely to overeat. You usually overeat when you feel the following:
How do you feel at the end of the day? You're probably angry if you've had a tough day at work or a tough commute home. Perhaps you have a job where you have to respond to other people's needs all day. You may feel lonely if you're isolated. You don't have to be physically alone to feel lonely. And you're probably tired. That's why the strongest cravings for emotional eating usually occur at the end of the day. At the end of the day you’re so tense that you forget the promises you made to yourself earlier about healthy eating. You just want to relax and comfort yourself. In other words, when you're tense you tend to do what’s familiar and wrong instead of what’s new and right. You will see results quickly. If you practice mindbody relaxation for thirty to forty minutes a day, within a month you will feel more relaxed and have fewer urges to overeat. Within three to four months you will see a maintained difference in your eating habits and in your weight. Within a year your new eating habits will be part of your life.
